  • Course Overview

     

    Our Games Development courses are designed to give you the skills and knowledge to create your own games using industry-standard software and best practices. By the end of the course, you’ll have completed several projects that you can showcase in your personal portfolio, helping you take the next step toward a career in the games industry.

    You’ll explore all key areas of game development, including programming, 2D and 3D asset creation, game design documentation, and more. This hands-on approach lets you experience different aspects of the industry so you can discover the area of game development that excites you most and suits your future goals.

    Our vocational course provides valuable insight into the games industry, offering opportunities to connect and collaborate with Industry professionals. In previous years, we have partnered with leading companies such as Creative Assembly, Hangar 13, EPIC, Unity, Make Real, The Chinese RoomMediatonic and NDreams. Students also gain experience by participating in local festivals, conventions, and Game Jams, further enhancing their skills and industry awareness.

    Our courses are 100% coursework-based, meaning there are no exams. Your progress is measured through the projects you create, giving you the freedom to focus on building practical skills while developing your portfolio.

     

    LEVEL 2 

    Our Level 2 Games Development course is a one-year course that aims to be a supportive introduction to the world of game creation, perfect for anyone taking their first steps into the industry. This course focuses on 2D game development, giving you the guidance and skills you need to design and build your very own games.

    You’ll learn to use industry-recognised tools such as Piskel and Construct 3, while developing essential skills in 2D art creation, basic coding, and game design principles.

    If you still need to achieve an English or Maths qualification, you can continue to receive support in these areas alongside your games studies, ensuring you stay on track for your future goals.

    By the end of the course, you’ll have created and published your own 2D game demo to a recognised marketplace, giving you a professional-quality project to include in your portfolio and showcase to future employers or educators.

     

    LEVEL 3

    Our Level 3 Games Development course is a two-year course that focuses on 3D game creation, helping you build the skills needed to take the next step toward a career in the games industry.

    You’ll work with industry-standard software such as Unity and Unreal Engine for game development, and Blender for 3D modelling and animation. You’ll also learn how to plan and develop a professional game design document and pitch your ideas, valuable skills for impressing future employers, universities, or even investors.

    This generalist course gives you the chance to experience every key area of game development, allowing you to discover which path excites you most, whether that’s programming, 3D art, animation, or game design, so you can make an informed decision about progressing into higher education or straight into the industry.

    You’ll also explore income opportunities in the games industry, giving you an insight into how you can turn your new skills into a career.

     

    What You Will Learn

    Throughout the course, you’ll explore every step of the game creation process, including:

    • Game Design Fundamentals
      Develop a solid understanding of professional game design processes, including Game Design Documentationinvestor pitchingstudio workflows like Scrum and Kanban, and even scriptwriting for games.
    • Collaborative Skills
      The games industry thrives on collaboration, so learning to work effectively in a team is essential. Throughout the course, you’ll have multiple opportunities to work with like-minded peers on collaborative projects that showcase your growing skills.
    • Industry Knowledge
      Build an understanding of the business side of games development, including revenue streams, technical terminology, and how games are structured, planned, and developed from start to finish.
    • How to Build an Effective Portfolio
      By the end of each year, you’ll have a collection of completed projects to include in your professional portfolio, helping you stand out to future employers, clients, or educators.

     

    Where will it take you

    • Achieve a Level 2 Extended Certificate or Level 3 Extended Diploma in RSL Creative Digital Media (Games Design)
    • You will gain understanding of fundamental game design and development principles
    • Achieve experience and skills in industry used  game design software such as Construct, Piskel, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator
    • Explore various roles within the video games industry & identify revenue streams to support an income
    • Have the opportunity to achieve GCSE grade 4 or above in English and/or Maths (If applicable)
    • A Level 3 Extended Diploma supports progression onto further educational pathways, particularly University.
    • Students who demonstrate strong skills and a standout portfolio by the end of the course are ready to pursue entry-level opportunities in the games industry
    • Students with a strong entrepreneurial skillset and a standout portfolio will be able to set up as freelance games designer

    At level 3 Year 2 (Second Year) – RSL Creative Digital Media (Games Design) Level 3 Extended Diploma

  • Who is this course for?

    This course is for young people aged 16-18 (or up to 24 with an EHCP) who wish to develop a career working within game design and development or a related field.
