What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a work-based training programme that combines practical on-the-job experience with structured learning. Apprentices earn a wage while studying towards an industry-recognised qualification. Programmes range from Level 2 (equivalent to GCSEs) to Level 7 (Master’s degree level).
What does an apprenticeship involve
- Apprentices will learn and refine the knowledge skills and behaviours they need to succeed and make progress in their job roles.
- Apprentices aged 16-18 will also study English & maths if they do not already have a qualification at grade 4 or higher
- Apprentices aged 19+ now have the option of opting out of English & Maths

Entry Requirements:
An apprenticeship is a great paid work opportunity for people over the age of 16 in England who:
- Are aged 16+
- Have the right to work in England
- Have an eligible residency status and be living in England
- Already have or be applying for a 35-hour-per-week job that demonstrates the skills required for this apprenticeship programme.
- Are looking to upskill in their current job/ looking for a career-change
- Are be able to surf the internet, send and receive emails with attachments, complete written work using a computer (with Microsoft Word) and be generally IT literate.
Apprenticeship Duration
The minimum duration of an apprenticeship is 12 months, however, from August 2025, this will reduce to 8 months for some sectors.
Financial Support for Care Leavers and Apprentices with an EHCP
- Apprentices aged 16-24 may be eligible to receive a £3,000 bursary if they have been in the care of a UK local authority (criteria apply)
- Additional Learning Support (ALS) – For Apprentices who have an EHCP or a learning difficulty/disability, your training provider can access extra funding to provide one-to-one support, assistive technology, or adapted learning materials.
Government Support & Funding (Updated February 2025)
- Apprenticeship Levy: Large employers (with a payroll of over £3 million) continue to pay into the Apprenticeship Levy, which funds apprenticeships.
- SME Support: Small and medium-sized businesses (non-levy payers) only contribute 5% of the training costs, with the government funding the remaining 95%.
- Additional Support for Younger Apprentices: If you hire an apprentice aged 16-18, or up to 25 with an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) or who is a care leaver, you receive a £1,000 incentive payment.
