London Learning Consortium (LLC) has the pleasure of announcing that Mel Nebhrajani, Non-Executive Director of the LLC Board and Vice-Chair of the Growth and Business Development Committee (GBDC), has been appointed a Companion of the Bath (C.B.) in the Queen’s 2021 New Year’s Honours List.
The citation for her award states it is in recognition of her services to the Government Legal profession, especially during the COVID crisis.
Mel said: “I was stunned when I was told I was being appointed Companion of the Bath – it was so unexpected – but I am also utterly thrilled and proud. I want to thank all those who have supported me without whom this would never have happened. It is truly an honour!”
Commenting on the award, Dr Calvin Pike, Chair of the Board and Interim Chair of the Quality Curriculum and Performance Committee (QCAP), said: “Board members were thrilled to learn of Mel’s appointment as Companion of the Bath. We are proud of her services that have merited this honour and continue to be thankful for the supportive and constructively critical approach that Mel brings in her role as a LLC Non-Executive Director”
Mel is a qualified barrister who practised in chambers until 1998 with specialisms in property, charity and trusts. She joined the Government Legal Service in 1998, spending a year at the Charity Commission. Since then, she has advised a variety of departments including the Cabinet Office and Number 10.
From 1999 to 2001 Mel was a junior lawyer at the Education Department and returned in 2008 spending 6 years as a Deputy Director where she headed up a number of different legal teams, including the team advising on the careers service, those Not in Education, Employment or Training, and on Further Education. She was the Legal Director at the Department of Health and Social Care from 2016 to 2020, most recently leading the legal work in support of the department’s COVID-19 response. Since November 2020 she has been Director of Litigation, the largest Group in the Government Legal Department, leading litigation across all Whitehall departments.
Mel was shortlisted for the Asian Women of the Year Award 2020 and was highly commended by the judges for her public service.
