When does Black History begin for you?
Many might recall being in school during Black History Month in October and seeing posters of various Black historical figures around the school, and motivational quotes, in classes there would be a video, movie or documentary showing some of the most gripping and blood-curdling scenes of slavery and oppression. At the end of the month, some will have feelings of guilt, others will have this great sense of gratitude for their lives, some will have this thirst to learn more and others will finish the month unaffected, some may even have feelings of sorrow.
Why would some have feelings of sorrow?
Struggle, trials and tribulations play a huge role in Black History BUT struggle was not the beginning of Black History. Although it is necessary and sometimes very crucial to show the gritty and harsh realities of the oppression and abuse that many suffered, it’s also very important to acknowledge the history of Black people before slavery as well as after.
For example, do you know about John Blanke?

He was a Black Briton musician from Tudor England, he was one of the court trumpeters for Henry VII. He performed at Henry VII’s funeral and Henry VIII’s coronation in 1509.
Or Jacques Francis, an African Salvage Diver.

He led the expedition to salvage King Henry VIII’s guns from the Mary Rose ship.
Or Mary Fillis…

Originally from Morocco but lived in Tudor England in the 1500s, Mary Fillis was a successful seamstress.
The theme of Black History Month 2023 is:
Celebrating our Sisters/ Saluting our Sisters/ Matriarchs of Movement
This theme aims to emphasise the vital role black women have played in forming history, inspiring change, and building communities. Too often the amazing contributions of black women are often unnoticed and dismissed. It’s important for us to take the time to learn about these amazing women and raise awareness about Black History Month in general.
So let’s celebrate the achievements of black people from the beginning of time until the present day and get ready to celebrate those to come!
